Last year, Germany imported 95,000 t of pellets from the US, which corresponds to an increase of 17,600% compared to 2022. In 2013, imports from the US totaled 43,400 t and in 2014, they amounted to 39,800 t. In some years, import volumes were even below 100 t, for example in 2011 (31 t) and in 2019 (71 t), as data published by Destatis show. In the first nine months of 2023, imports, of mainly industrial pellets, amounted to 94,000 t. In contrast to previous quarters, Germany did not buy any larger quantities in the fourth quarter.

Denmark sold nearly 97,000 t of pellets to Germany in 2023, recording an increase of 7% compared to 2022 (90,500 t). Along with Poland, Denmark has been one of Germany’s main suppliers for years. Over the past 15 years, import volumes of the northern neighbor have fluctuated between 51,000 t (2016) and 108,000 t (2013).

In 2022, Germany imported 111,500 t of pellets from Poland. In the following year, only 63,000 t were purchased, which corresponds to a decrease of 43% or 48,000 t. In 2017, imports from Poland totaled 115,000 t, a record quantity. Never before had Germany imported more pellets from a single country in one year.

Pellet imports from Austria amounted to 25,000 t last year (+63% compared to 2022). According to Destatis, import volumes from Austria had always been somewhere between 40,000 and 56,000 t in the years from 2012 to 2015.

Imports from Belgium rose by 44% to 49,000 t in 2023, and those from Ukraine increased by 14% to 38,000 t. Germany also bought 4,200 t (+277%) from Bosnia-Herzegovina last year. Meanwhile, import volumes from the Netherlands decreased by 8% to 26,000 t and those from the Czech Republic were down by 11%, totaling only 33,000 t.
