According to the province’s government, 305 million seedlings were planted in British Columbia in 2023, and one of them marked the ten billion milestone. In honor of this milestone, Bruce Ralston, Minister of Forests, planted a tree in the Green Timbers Urban Forest Park in Surrey. The site is home to the province’s first reforestation efforts in 1930.

Forest owners have been legally required to implement reforestation measures since 1987. In addition to legislated reforestation efforts, an additional 50 million trees will be planted this year through several provincial and federal programs. These reforestation measures are aimed at reducing or sequestering two million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.
