3.6 million m³ of softwood logs imported

In the first seven months, Austria imported 3.6 million m³ of softwood logs. In the same period of 2023, imports totaled 3.8 million m³. It is the smallest volume since 2017 (3.3 million m³). In 2012 (2.5 million m³), the smallest import volume since 2002 was recorded. In the first seven months of 2021, 4.8 million m³ of softwood logs were purchased from foreign suppliers and in the same period of 2021, imports amounted to 4.7 million m³.

Germany and the Czech Republic supplied 80% of the foreign softwood logs. Specifically, Austria purchased 1.6 million m³ (+2%) from Germany and 1.2 million m³ (-11%) from the Czech Republic.

Statistik Austria also reports decreases in imports from Italy (323,000 m³; -27%), Poland (39,000 m³; -26%), Switzerland (32,000 m³; -33%) and Slovakia (25,000 m³; -59%). Purchases of Swedish softwood logs were down by 86% or 31,000 m³ compared to 2023 and totaled only 5,000 m³ as a result.

Meanwhile, softwood log imports from Slovenia increased by 51%, from 183,000 m³ in the first seven months of 2023 to 275,000 m³ this year.
