Yesterday Stora Enso, Helsinki/FI, and Arauco, Santiago/CL, started up their joint-venture pulp mill in Montes del Plata. The plant in the southwest of Urugay cost 1.72 billion which includes a newly built port terminal for 174 million. Both wood-paper-groups hold 50% of the shares in the project.
The facility has a capacity of 1.3 million tons/yr of bleached eucalyptus pulp. Stora Enso intends to sell its entire 650 million ton/yr-share as market pulp, according to a press release. Once in full operation, this plant will increase Uruguay's GDP by 2% and the country’s exports by 7%.
