Marked increase in softwood lumber production

Article by Martina Nöstler (translated by Eva Guzely) | 29.03.2021 - 09:42

Last year, Germany produced 19.73 million m³ of softwood lumber and planed timber (spruce/fir, pine and other types of softwood). This is according to data published by Destatis and the Association of the German Sawmill and Timber Industry (DeSH). It was the biggest volume of softwood lumber ever produced and a 6.6% increase compared to 2019 (18.51 million m³).

In the single quarters of 2020, production was also higher than in the respective quarters of 2019. Something else was particularly remarkable: In the years from 2016 to 2019, the fourth quarter was always the weakest one. In 2020, however, it was the strongest with an output of 5.07 million m³. In the fourth quarter of 2020, production grew by 13.7% compared to the same period of 2019.
