Article by Martina Nöstler (translated by Eva Guzely) | 12.06.2024 - 09:12

In the first quarter, Italy imported 1.07 million m³ of softwood lumber and planed timber, recording a year-on-year decrease of 5.5%. In the first three months of 2022 (1.23 million m³) and 2021 (1.02 million m³), the 1-million-m³-mark was exceeded, too. In the same period of the years 2018 to 2020, softwood lumber imports totaled between 924,000 m³ and 993,000 m³.

According to Eurostat, Italy bought 600,000 m³ of softwood lumber from Austria in the first quarter. Compared to 2023, this corresponds to a slight decrease of 2%. Statistik Austria, on the other hand, reports an export volume of 684,000 m³ in the same period.

Smaller volumes were also purchased from Germany (160,000 m³; -9%), Finland (60,000 m³; -21%), the Czech Republic (53,000 m³; -4%) and Ukraine (28,000 m³; -15%). According to figures published by Eurostat, Italy imported more softwood lumber from only two of the Top 10 suppliers, i.e. from France (23,000 m³; +14%) and Switzerland (23,000 m³; +34%).
