Increase in softwood lumber exports

1.4 million m³, which is the same export volume as last year, were sold to Italy, by far Austria’s most important trading partner. In total, Austria delivered 46% of its exported softwood lumber to its neighbor in the south.

Smaller volumes of softwood lumber were exported to Germany (374,000 m³; -6%) and Slovenia (244,000 m³; -3%). The last time deliveries to Germany were at a similarly low level was in 2015 (370,000 m³). Over the past ten years, an average of 476,000 m³ of softwood lumber were sold to Germany in the first six months.

Substantial increases were recorded in exports to Japan (108,000 m³; +53%) and Romania (56,000 m³; +114%). Nevertheless, Japan in particular received even larger volumes of softwood lumber in recent years. In a ten-year comparison, a smaller export volume was recorded only in 2023.

In the first six months, Austria exported 98,000 m³ of softwood lumber to Croatia, recording a year-on-year increase of 16%. The Czech Republic increased its purchases by around one fifth compared to 2023 (78,000 m³; +22%).

Austria exported substantially more softwood lumber to Saudi Arabia: 36,000 m³ correspond to around 3.5 times the 2023 volume. Kuwait increased its softwood lumber purchases from almost zero last year to 23,000 m³ this year. While the United Arab Emirates more than doubled their imports (26,000 m³; 121%), Pakistan tripled its purchases compared to 2023 (13,000 m³; +174%).
