According to the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), Finland’s wood processing industry generated 60% of its export revenues on the European market, while Asian countries accounted for 21%. The three most important sales markets were Germany (11%), followed by China (10%) and the US (9%). Export revenues totaled more than €3 billion and were thus 2% higher than in 2023.
Last year, Finland exported 8.2 million m³ of softwood lumber, 48% of which to European countries. According to preliminary data from Luke, the cumulative value of exports grew by 7% to just under €2 billion.
The pulp and paper industry recorded stable export revenues in 2024, although individual product groups developed differently in terms of volumes and value. While pulp exports decreased substantially (4.1 million t; -9%), paper exports increased in volume (2.7 million t; +4%). The value, however, fell slightly. Cardboard was once again the top-selling product group, with an export value of almost €3.3 billion.
Log wood dominates imports
In 2024, Finland imported a total of 5.6 million m³ of wood. Year on year, this corresponds to an increase of 11%. Pulp and fiber wood accounted for 57% of this total volume, wood chips for 31% and sawlogs for 2%. The remaining 10% were energy wood and by-products. The value of wood imports amounted to €400 million (+9%). Latvia was the main log supplier with a volume of 2.2 million m³ (+43%), followed by Estonia with 1.7 million m³.
Finland’s lumber imports totaled 52,000 m³ in 2024, as Luke reports. The import volume increased by 11%, while the value decreased by 1% to €3.7 million.
