The lightweight and prefabricated mass timber elements made it possible to build a multi-story mixed-use building for the first time in a long while. “We want to be a forerunner of sustainable building solutions and showcase the way to modern wood use as part of more climate-friendly urban construction of the future. Katajanokan Laituri is a masterpiece of Finnish timber construction and is already considered a landmark,” Hans Sohlström, President and CEO of Stora Enso, says.
The use of wood reduced CO2 emissions during production and construction by 35% compared to building in conventional concrete. “By using the Sylva by Stora Enso kit, we could efficiently construct this large-scale building in a dense urban environment. It took only 171 just-in-time deliveries and seven months for more than 2,000 load-bearing wooden elements to be installed on site. Thanks to the mixed-use building concept, Katajanokan Laituri’s structure can be adapted to future needs. If it is no longer used as a hotel or office building, it can be flexibly redesigned,” Antto Kauhanen, Business Development Manager at Stora Enso Wood Products and project manager for the new building, says.
