The individual components of the carrier were transported to Ober-Grafendorf in a container and then assembled on site by a Combilift technician. “Since we started using the Combi-SC, it has brought us many advantages,” Walter Seiberl, operations manager at Rubner Holzbau in Ober-Grafendorf, explains: “For us, it’s important to make transport extremely cost effective, which is why we prefer loads to be as big as possible, whilst of course always in compliance with transport regulations. Only a few devices are able to handle such large loads. We saw a Combi-SC at the Combilift stand at the Ligna trade fair in Hanover and were impressed with its capabilities. Combilift personnel are also very easy to work with. They have always taken our specific requirements into account and it did not take long to work out the specifications for our tailor made SC. In addition to the optimal use of space, we also reduced loading times and increased workplace safety.”
Ideal solution
In Ober-Grafendorf, the very large and bulky loads used to be transported inside a warehouse using forklifts and overhead cranes. Thanks to the Combi-SC straddle carrier the loading zone could be moved outside, which freed up a lot of space in the production area. Since the Combi-SC moves above the load before picking it up, the loads can now be stacked closer to each other and Rubner Holzbau can make the best possible use of the space in the loading zone.
Custom-built
Combilift built a customized Combi-SC for Rubner Holzbau based on the requirements defined by the company. The extreme length and the maximum weight of the loads as well as the height of the halls were taken into account. The model in use at Rubner Holzbau has a capacity of 27,000 kg and a 16-meter-long attachment with adjustable lifting points, which ensures the easy and stable transport of 50-meter-long loads. The telescopic function of the Combi-SC allows the operator to enter the halls, pick up the loads and bring them outside, where they can be loaded onto waiting trucks with just one lift procedure.
The three-wheel design, two-wheel drive, two-wheel steering and the hydrostatic drive ensure maneuverability and flexible operation on site. Rubner Holzbau opted for a remote-controlled model which offers further advantages in terms of safety and productivity, such as giving the operator the best possible view of the load and the surroundings.
