Laminated timber imports down by 40%

Shipments from main supplier Finland, which accounts for nearly 44% of Japan’s total imports, fell by 136,000 m³ to 222,000 m³.

Imports from Romania (72,000 m³; -50%) and Austria (58,000 m³; -48%) even halved compared to last year. In both countries, nearly the entire foreign trade volume is provided by two companies: HS Timber in Romania and Stora Enso in Austria (and Finland).

Glulam and CLT imports from Estonia (47,000 m³; -12%) and Poland (33,000 m³; -9%) saw less marked decreases.

As figures published by Statistics of Japan show, German manufacturers basically lost Japan as a sales market. In the first eleven months of 2022, Germany exported around 34,000 m³ of glulam and CLT to Japan. In the same period of this year, only a few hundred cubic meters were shipped there.
