With a quantity of over 29,000 t, the US was by far Germany’s most important supplier of wood pellets in the first two months of 2023. This year, however, the country recorded a massive decrease of 88% to only 5,800 t and has fallen to fifth place as a result.
A similar development can be observed in the Czech Republic. In 2023, the country ranked second behind the US. In the first two months of this year, however, deliveries from Germany’s neighbor decreased by 91% year on year to only around 1,500 t. In the ranking, the Czech Republic is now only in eighth place.
Austria was also one of the losers: Pellet deliveries more than halved compared to last year (2,600 t; -55%).
Germany tried to compensate for these decreases by importing more wood pellets from other neighboring countries. Denmark, for example, recorded a 77% increase to 12,600 t and has become Germany’s new number one supplier as a result. Poland (9,700 t; +44%) and Belgium (7,400 t; +7%) follow in second and third place, respectively. In the first two months of 2023, France only delivered a “homeopathic dose” of around 400 t to Germany. This year, more than 2,800 t were imported from the neighbor in the west.
