Starting from 14 August 2021, all PEFC Chain-of-Custody certificates have to refer to the new standards. All in all, three standards have entered into force.
PEFC ST 2002:2020, also known as “Chain-of-Custody-Standard”, includes an updated definition of so-called “controversial sources”. Apart from legality, sustainability criteria have been included for the first time to avoid timber from unsustainable sources from entering the timber value chain. Furthermore, great importance is attributed to the respect of social criteria and the compliance with requirements relating to labor safety and health.
The new trademark standard PEFC ST 2001:2020 replaces the old PEFC Logo usage rules, and strengthens the consistent use of PEFC trademarks worldwide. The trademark standard introduces the new claim “100% PEFC Origin”.
The requirements for certification bodies in the area of chain of custody certification now also include additional regular training of auditors (PEFC ST 2003:2020).
