From January to May, China imported a total of 11.8 million m³ of softwood logs, which corresponds to a year-on-year decrease of 3%, as figures published by China Customs Statistics show. While China bought 6.73 million m³, and thus 4% more, from its main supplier New Zealand, a much smaller volumes of softwood logs came from Germany (1.8 million m³; -27%).
A massive increase was recorded in imports from Poland, which were up by 603% and totaled 610,000 m³ in the first five months. As a result, Poland became China’s third-most important supplier of softwood logs. Shipments from Japan (478,000 m³; +15%) increased as well, while a downward trend can be observed in imports from Canada (415,000 m³; -7%), France (199,000 m³; -6%) or the Czech Republic (162,000 m³; -52%).
