From January to September 2021, as many as 6.3 million m³ of softwood sawlogs were imported. A year later, Austrian imports totaled 5.2 million m³ (-14%) and last year, 4.8 million m³ were purchased from foreign suppliers in the first nine months.
Imports from Germany increased by 4% year on year to 2.1 million m³, whereas shipments from the other Top 3 supplying countries, i.e. the Czech Republic (1.5 million m³; -14%) and Italy (380,000 m³; -32%), decreased substantially. Slovenia follows in fourth place with a volume of 348,000 m³ delivered to Austria and a 38% increase compared to 2023.
Sweden is nowhere to be found in the Top 10 ranking. In the first nine months, Austria still imported 41,000 m³ from the Scandinavian country. In the same period of 2022, imports totaled 43,000 m³. Thus, according to Statistik Austria, there are no softwood log imports from Scandinavia in the Top 10 this year.
