In the first ten months, German softwood log exports to Austria grew by 192,000 m³ or 11% compared to 2023 and totaled 2 million m³, making Austria the number one trading partner for the first time since 2018. So far this year, 37% of all the exported softwood logs were sold to Austria.
Contrary to that, shipments to China decreased by 47% or 912,000 m³ to only 1 million m³. China thus accounted for 19% of German exports. It seems like there is a gradual return to the pre-Covid situation. Up until 2018, hardly any significant volumes of softwood logs had been exported to China. Then, in 2020, the share rose to a record high of 52%, only to fall steadily again in recent years. Meanwhile, Austria’s share in German exports has been gradually increasing since 2021, according to data published by Destatis.
In addition to Austria, Germany recorded marked increases in its softwood log exports to Belgium (643,000 m³; +20%), the Czech Republic (623,000 m³; +35%), Luxembourg (168,000 m³; +14%), Sweden (140,000 m³; +134%) and the Netherlands (101,000 m³; +9%).
Foreign trade with Poland (175,000 m³; -58%), Lithuania (100,000 m³; -49%) and France (91,000 m³; -23%), on the other hand, decreased substantially.
