Plus 7%
Austria's largest sawmills (individual sites) of 2018 were Holzindustrie Maresch, Retz, Mayr-Melnhof in Leoben as well as Stora Enso in Ybbs with 1.2 million sm³ each. Binderholz, Fügen, also cracked the 1 million mark with a total of 1.04 million sm³. The ten biggest enterprises in Austria together yielded a cutting volume of 9.92 million sm³ in 2018. In total, the reported cutting volume of all enterprises amounted to 12.61 million sm³ which in comparison to 2017 means an increase by 7.1% or +830,000 sm³.
Adding those sawmills that did not provide any figures, the cutting volume of Austrian sawmills with an output above 50,000 sm³/yr totals 14.4 million sm³ according to Timber-Online estimations.
Cutting will increase further
The projected figures for 2019 indicate that the good economic situation for Austria's sawmill industry could continue. A lot of enterprises expect cutting increases. The biggest growth is anticipated by Holzindustrie Maresch with an increase by 100,000 sm³ to a total of 1.3 million sm³. From 2020 onwards, even more increases could occur: Hasslacher Norica Timber announced the expansion of its Preding site in May 2018. The investments are expected to be completed in 2020. After that, the Styrian location is said to reach a cutting volume of up to 600,000 sm³/yr. Currently, the annual output amounts to about 250,000 sm³.
Still pending is a new sawmill construction in (Upper) Austria. The company is busy planning, also the property has already been purchased. A definite decision, however, has not yet been made. What is missing is, among other things, a construction permit. Due to the good order situation of machine producers, however, a launch in 2019 seems unlikely at this point.
