Decrease in softwood sawn timber imports

In January, the US imported 2.41 million m³ of softwood sawn timber. According to the FAS, this corresponds to a decrease of 2% year on year. The volume imported in January is the smallest in recent years. In January 2018, for example, the US imported 2.69 million m³. In 2017, imports amounted to 3.05 million m³.

Of the Top 5 supplying countries, only Germany saw its sales rise in the US: 111,000 m³ correspond to an increase of 25%. Imports from Canada (2.08 million m³; -3%), Brazil (44,000 m³; -17%), Sweden (41,000 m³; -14%) and Chile (25,000 m³; -3%), on the other hand, decreased.

In January 2020, the US bought 19,000 m³ of softwood sawn timber from Austria, i.e. 14% more than in the same period of 2019.
