3.2 million cubic meters (+52%) from Europe

Last year, the US imported nearly 35.5 million m³ of softwood lumber, which corresponds to an increase of 4% or nearly 1.5 million m³ compared to 2019. This is according to data published by the FAS.

In 2020, the US bought 30.85 million m³ (+0.4%) from Canada and thus slightly more than in 2019. Imports from Germany were up by 42%, reaching a total of 1.63 million m³. Those from Sweden and Brazil rose by 72% to 689,000 m³ and by 31% to 647,000 m³, respectively. Austria completes the quintet of main suppliers (319,000 m³; +48%). The five main supplying countries shipped a total of 34.1 million m³ to the US, accounting for nearly 96% of overall softwood imports.

Shipment volumes from Europe are even more relevant. In 2020, they grew by 52% to 3.2 million m³, approaching a level which was last recorded in the mid-noughties.
