At the beginning of the year, the Holzkurier carries out its traditional survey on cutting volumes of those Austrian sawmills which cut more than 50,000 m³ of logs a year. In 2021, cutting of the companies which reported their figures totaled 14.65 million m³. Compared to the year before (around 14 million m³), this would be a 5% increase. However, there were some changes in reporting: While four new companies entered the market in 2021, one of them did not report any figures this year.
If you make an estimate on the quantities cut by the companies which did not report their figures themselves, cutting amounted to around 16.2 million m³ in 2021. In the year before, it had totaled 15.7 million m³.
As was the case last year, the biggest single production site in Austria is located in the Lower Austrian Weinviertel. Holzindustrie Maresch of Retz cut 1.25 million m³ in 2021. Stora Enso in Ybbs is in second place with 1.18 million m³, followed by Mayr-Melnhof Holz in Leoben with 1.09 million m³. In total, there are five production sites, according to the companies, which cut 1 million m³ or more last year. The ten biggest sawmill companies which indicated their 2021 figures reported an overall cutting of around 10.8 million m³. The volume thus remained more or less stable compared to 2020 (10.7 million m³).
2022 could see another increase with target cutting (reported figures plus estimates) likely to reach around 16.9 million m³. Many sawmill companies expect cutting to remain stable this year. Around one quarter of the companies plans to raise the cutting volume compared to last year. The biggest change is brought about by the Handlos sawmill being started up: In 2022, cutting is to reach 450,000 m³ in Summerau in Upper Austria.
