The biggest export volume to date, i.e. 7.66 million m³, was recorded in 2007. In that year, Austria had exported 4.5 million m³ of softwood lumber to Italy. In 2023, exports to its neighbor in the south totaled only 2.48 million m³. Nevertheless, Italy remained the most important foreign market for Austrian softwood lumber, followed by Germany (721,000 m³; -21%). A downward trend can also be observed in exports to Germany. In 2020, Germany still received 1.2 million m³ from Austria.
Shipments to the MENA region, on the other hand, grew substantially. The increases in deliveries to Slovenia (533,000 m³; +37%) and Croatia (182,000 m³; +21%) reflect this (the softwood lumber makes its way to the MENA region from the ports in the two countries).
In addition to the MENA region, Japan (149,000 m³; -44%) and the USA (136,000 m³; -21%) were the most important overseas markets for Austria in 2023.
