Until the end of November 2024, China imported 15.3 million m³ of softwood lumber, which corresponds to a year-on-year decrease of nearly 7%. Shipments coming from Europe were particularly affected (-30%).
This year, the EU-27 only exported 1.6 million m³ of softwood lumber to China, i.e. 700,000 m³ fewer than last year. As a result, the share of European deliveries in China’s total imports fell from 14% to 10%.
Despite a year-on-year decrease of 24%, Finland is now China’s number one European supplier with a trade volume of 570,000 m³. In 2023, Sweden still held that title with 700,000 m³. This year, however, the country saw its deliveries shrink by 45%. German exports, too, decreased substantially by 36% to 420,000 m³.
Russia remains the number one supplying country with 10.4 million m³ even though trade was down by 5%. Canada shipped a constant 1.1 million m³ of softwood lumber to China in the first eleven months.
