Lumber exports down by half a million cubic meters

Article by Raphael Kerschbaumer (translated by Eva Guzely) | 04.12.2024 - 08:59

From January to September, Sweden exported 9.92 million m³ of softwood lumber and planed timber. As a result of the 5% year-on-year decrease, the country narrowly missed the 10-million-m³-mark in 2024. When you look at long-term data in our Datacube, you can see that the first three quarters of 2023 (10.45 million m³) and 2020 (10.4 million m³) were the only times in which Sweden exported bigger volumes than in the same period of this year.

Decreases in many of the smaller foreign markets which Sweden serves are the main reason for this overall downward trend. Outside of its Top 10 supplier countries, the country lost almost 19% (550,000 m³) year on year. The Datacube offers you the opportunity to gain insight into the statistics of each individual Swedish trading partner.

On the main export markets, on the other hand, Sweden was able to mostly compensate losses. Marked decreases were recorded in softwood lumber exports to Great Britain (2.03 million m³; -5%) and the US (760,000 m³; -9%), while shipments to Egypt (980,000 m³; +7%) and Japan (624,000 m³; +43%) increased compared to last year.
