In 2024, Japan increased its softwood lumber imports by 21% to a total of 3.86 million m³. Despite such strong growth, it was the second-weakest year since 1998, as a look in the Datacube shows. In the past 25 years, Japan imported on average 6.34 million m³ of softwood lumber a year. In the past decade, the average annual import volume was 5.06 million m³.
Canada was once again the main supplying country, with a 9% increase and a trade volume of 825,000 m³. Sweden (774,000 m³; +37%) and Finland (708,000 m³; +22%) followed in second and third place, respectively. Other important suppliers included Russia (530,000 m³; +14%) and Austria (184,000 m³; +16%).
Japan purchased 2.16 million m³ of softwood lumber from EU countries. As a result, the EU’s share in total Japanese imports reached a new record high of 56%.
