Manufacturers in Germany recorded a decrease of 2% and an output of 1.29 million m³, while output in Austria grew by 1.3% and reached 1.61 million m³ in 2021. The main reason for the decrease in German production was the shuttering of Gropyus’s site in Riechen.
The target figures for 2022, on the other hand, show the opposite development. While a slight decrease is projected in Austria (-0.7%), production is expected to grow strongly in Germany (+5.1%). New production sites and lines are the main reason for this development (The Holzkurier used the 2021 figures for those companies which did not report their target figures).
New glulam production sites in Germany
In 2021, two new glulam plants went into operation in Germany. In Abtsgmünd, Holzwerke Bullinger started up a plant with an annual one-shift capacity of 13,000 m³. This year, the company expects output to reach 25,000 m³. Rettenmeier Holzindustrie plans to produce 60,000 m³ at its new glulam site in Hirschberg this year. At this site, the one-shift capacity is 20,000 m³ a year.
In 2022, Cordes Holz will put a new glulam production site into operation in Bremerhaven, which will have a one-shift capacity of 25,000 m³. Also, another glulam production line with an annual capacity of 40,000 m³ will start operating at Ladenburger in Bopfingen.
HS Timber Productions, a subsidiary of the HS Timber Group, is building a glulam plant at its site in Kodersdorf. The plant is to be built on an 11-hectare site south of the existing sawmill, with production scheduled to start at the beginning of 2023.
The biggest single production sites
Binderholz operates the biggest glulam production site in Central Europe. In Jenbach, the Tyrol-based group produced 255,000 m³ of glulam in 2021. This year, Binderholz plans to reach a new record output of 280,000 m³. The second biggest glulam production in the German speaking countries is that of the Hasslacher Group in Magdeburg.
Three manufacturers produce nearly 1 million m³
In 2021, Hasslacher Group was by far the biggest European manufacturer of glulam with its production sites in Magdeburg and Kleinheubach in Germany as well as Sachsenburg and Hermagor in Austria and a cumulated output of 410,000 m³. Year on year, the Carinthian company was able to increase its production by 10,000 m³. Mayr-Melnhof Holz is Europe’s second biggest glulam manufacturer with 320,000 m³, followed by Binderholz with an output of 255,000 m³. In total, these three companies produced 985,000 m³ of glulam and therefore account for a market share of around one third.
