In order to analyze the 2024 glulam market in Germany and Austria, the past year has to be taken into account. The production adjustments which started in 2023 led to an adjusted market situation in Central Europe despite the ramp-up of the production sites which were opened in 2022/2023. Glulam is referred to as the glued timber product where supply best matches demand.
Austrian manufacturers are reducing their output substantially. The 2024 target production volumes are 11% smaller than those of 2022 and 14% smaller than the production output in the peak year of 2021, when Austria produced over 1.6 million m³. In comparison, production is expected to total only 1.4 million m³ this year.
In Germany, production volumes increased this year as well. Output again exceeded 1.34 million m³, which is the biggest production volume we have ever recorded in our surveys. The drop in production in 2023 (1.295 million m³) has thus been more than compensated for. Several companies switched from the usual three-shift work to an extended two-shift operation.
HS Timber has started production in Kodersdorf. At full capacity, 80,000 m³ could be produced at the site. According to estimates by the Holzkurier, an output of around 35,000 m³ was achieved this year. Cordes Holz’s ramp-up of the Bremerhaven site is experiencing a steep curve: After 25,000 m³ in 2023, the company is planning to produce as many as 50,000 m³ this year.
