The largest quantities came from Canada with 526,000 m³, which was able to increase its exports by 38%. In the past ten years, Japan imported an average of 888,000 m³ from Canada in the first half of the year, which is 360,000 m³ compared to this year.
Japan purchased 457,000 and 384,000 m³ respectively from Sweden and Finland. The Scandinavians thus increased their exports by 42% and 18% respectively compared to 2023. Japan also imported more softwood sawn timber from Russia (+15% to 319,000 m³) and Austria (+18% to 106,000 m³) than in the same period last year. Japan purchased 98,000 m³ (–11%) from Chile, the only country among the top suppliers to export less softwood sawn timber to Japan than in the previous year.
Japan imported more than twice as much softwood sawn timber from Romania (+139% to 87,000 m³) and the Czech Republic (+110% to 51,000 m³). Germany also doubled its exports (+99% to 81,000 m³), according to figures from the Japanese Statistics Agency.
