This decline was also recorded in deliveries to the EU-27 countries, which also fell by 8% to 2.4 million m³. Exports to the EU were above this year's level only in 2023 (2.65 million m³) and 2022 (2.57 million m³).
In the past ten years, the Swedish sawmill industry exported an average of 1.34 million m³ to the MENA region in the first half of the year. This year, exports fell to 1.25 million m³, a decrease of 12% compared to 2023. Nevertheless, these deliveries are 20% higher than in the high-price years 2021 and 2022.
Egypt, Sweden's most important MENA market, declined more in the first half of 2024 (+5% to 643.000 m³). In contrast, deliveries to Algeria plummeted by 37% and reached only 150.000 m³. Morocco, Sweden's second most important MENA market, increased its imports by 12% to 196.000 m³.
