In the first six months, 5,000 pellet boilers were sold in Germany. While pellet boilers account for half of all the biomass-powered heat generation systems sold, sales decreased by as many as 78% compared to the first half of 2023. Sales of combined boilers, too, decreased to 1,000 units (-78%). Furthermore, 2,000 boilers for firewood (-71%) and the same number of wood chip-fired boilers (-54%) were sold in the months from January to June 2024.
In total, 378,000 heat generation systems were sold in Germany in the first half of this year, i.e. 43% fewer than in the same period of 2023. With 223,000 boilers (-42%) sold, gas-powered heating systems still dominate the sales market.
According to the BDH, around 21.5 million heating systems in Germany are considered to be obsolete. Manufacturers of heating systems mostly give negative assessments on the market development, but hope for some positive impetus, for example through the expansion of subsidies.
