Initially, the rules for large companies were supposed to come into effect on December 30, and those for small companies six months later. However, the EU Comission’s President Ursula von der Leyen is quoted as saying that the regulation cannot come into force as planned, without going into detail.
In recent months, the European People’s Party (EPP), some EU member states, industry associations, and also trading partners – including the US, Australia and Brazil – have turned to the EU Commission and asked for the EUDR to be postponed, as not all details have been clarified yet.
In a letter published on Thursday, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats (S&D), on the other hand, called on Mrs. von der Leyen and Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič to implement the EU Deforestation Regulation on time and to quickly publish the missing additional documents. The Greens are also committed to meeting the deadline, as they fear that changes to the implementation deadline in the law could lead to a further watering down of rules.
The Commission itself said on September 19 (as before) that the deadline has been set and that they are working hard to ensure the smooth implementation of the EUDR.
