Another CLT plant in the Black Forest

Only three weeks ago, Holzkurier reported about what was thought to be the first planned cross-laminated timber production plant in the Black Forest: The HolzBauWerk Schwarzwald is to go into operation in autumn 2022.

However, SBS Schwarzwald Holzbausysteme started up its cross-laminated timber plant in Friesenheim already at the beginning of January. “On May 2nd, 2020 we poured the first foundations for the pile foundation, on August 3rd we started assembling the machines and on January 4th we produced the first cross-laminated timber elements. This speed was only possible thanks to our own timber construction company Weschle GmbH Holzbau+Planung, which took over the construction of the 4,000 m²-big production hall as general contractor,” comments Managing Director Moritz Weschle.

The plant’s annual production capacity is 25,000 m³, however, the next expansion stage is already being planned and according to Weschle, it can be implemented on the three hectare-big site even on short notice. The company plans to work in a two-shift operation from mid-2021 and to be at full capacity from 2022.

SBS offers cross-laminated timber in the qualities “residential visible”, “industrial visible” and “non-visible”. The maximum panel dimension is 16.2 x 3.6 x 0.3 meters.
